Top 10 Dog Breeds with Strongest Bites

There are many dogs live with us. Dogs are great pets and one of the most common animals in the world. They are good friends not only for ordinary people, but also for humans with disabilities. They are intelligent and strong. On the other side, either large or small, there are dogs you call for help just by looking at you; aggressiveness is clear in their eyes. To measure the strength of dog bites, a scientific scale called Pound per Square Inch is used. As you probably guessed, the dog with the highest PSI is the one with the strongest bite. “American Veterinary Medical Association” has conducted a study on verity of dog breeds to see which dog has the strongest bite force. Here are the top 10 breeds that are known to have strong bites, along with their PSI.

10 Chow Chow [Bite Force – 220 PSI]

It might be a little surprise for you to see chow chow dog on the list of the strongest bites. Just because they are small does not mean they do not have strong jaws. In fact, Chow Chows were reported to be responsible for eight deaths in research journals. On average, Chow Chow weighs about 28 kg (60 lb), while only 52cm (20 inches) high. This dog breed is known to have an aggressive personality, especially amidst strangers. Chow Chows are usually considered cute pets for their size, but the risk increases when they get bored or do not get any exercise.

9 Dutch Shepherd [Bite Force – 224 PSI]

Dutch Shepherd has the 9th strongest bite. Shepherd is useful for farmers, but quite versatile dog. The origin of the Dutch Shepherd is Holland. They work hard and have very little demands due to their endurance of harsh climates. They are similar to the Belgian and German shepherds. They are one of the most active dogs that you enjoy playing with, or do any outdoor activity. They are very loyal, intelligent and reliable. They are very good with children. They are also used by the police and other security agencies, because of their strong will and jaws. They are quiet and gentle, but their jaws can give a very strong bite with a force of 224 PSI. This bite is a nightmare for intruders.

8 American Pit Bull [Bite Force – 235 PSI]

The dog with the 8th bite force is the American Pit Bull. American Pit Bull is a medium sized dog with a weight range from 30 to 90 pounds. They are muscular and strong. In fact, they are one of the strongest dogs of their size category. They were bred to protect livestock and therefore are powerful. They are very playful though, especially when children are nearby. It is widely accepted that Pit Bulls are aggressive by nature, but for those who have raised them in their homes, this statement sounds like a bit of a joke. They behave so nicely and  respect their owners. Their nature depends on early socialization training; if they are not well socialized, nothing can stop their aggressive nature from a sudden manifest. They need regular exercise and training. Sometimes when bored, they can become a bit destructive. They have a wide face with a strong jaw and that is their main weapon. They can break hard stuff for you, if you want. So, if you have a Pit Bull, do not be surprised to see your friend here in this list.

7 German shepherd [Bite Force – 238 PSI]

The German shepherd is one of the most common pets in the world, German Shepherds are the second popular in the US. They were bred as working dogs in Germany. They are also known as “Alsace”, especially in the UK. They are very intelligent and often used in rescue missions by the military. They are valuable, easy to train and very adaptable to new locations. Their intelligence and power make them good guard dogs. They can be very aggressive when seeing danger. They have a strong bite force with 238 PSI. This power can break human bones. Nevertheless, they are gentle by nature and chill out when children are around.

6 Doberman [Bite Force – 245 PSI]

Known as an aggressive breed, they have the bite force of 245 PSI. By nature, this breed is very energetic, aggressive and intelligent. They are often used as guard dogs. However, if trained properly, they can be loyal to their masters. According to a research, they were responsible for nine deaths, most of them were due to the defense of their owners.

5 Bulldog [Bite Force – 305 PSI]

This husky, grim dog is also known for its strong bites. Despite the bad image, Bulldogs can be social and fun. Again, it comes down to how their owners train them. With proper socialization, they can be the best pets.

4 Rottweiler [Bite Force – 328 PSI]

Rottweiler or Rottie has a large head with big jaws. These are usually police or guard dogs and have a bite force of 328 PSI. These muscles and large body weigh up to 130 PSI. This breed is known to be brave, dutiful and loyal natured. According to a recent research, this breed was responsible for 39 deaths. His temperament swings between attentiveness and passiveness.

3 Wolf-dog [Bite Force – 406 PSI]

The third place in the list is taken by a “Greyhound” with a bite force of 406 PSI. This is a hybrid of the gray wolf; the mixture of genes makes it unpredictable compared to other dogs. However, they are trainable. According to studies, wolf dogs were responsible for fourteen deaths. 

2 Mastiffs [Bite Force – 556 PSI]

Although dogs are usually warm and friendly, they can rarely be dangerous. Many farmers around the world claim that these dogs have the strongest jaws. They have the bite force of 556 PSI. They weigh between 150 PSI and 160 PSI. When socialized,they can be calm and good tempered. However, if you are a stranger, do not disturb this quiet giant.

1 Kangal [Bite Force – 743 PSI]

Accordingly, the dog with the strongest bite is “Kangal”. This race are generally protective shepherd dogs, which means they are the keepers of sheep against wolves and other dangerous predators. They treat their owners like family or friends, thus protect them and their property with great dedication and loyalty.
