7 Things You Should Know While Buying an Air Conditioner in India

Summer has already kicked in, and Indian summers are quite famous for the unbearable temperature and humidity, making everyone uncomfortable. Most people in India are thus, inclined towards buying a new air conditioner or already have them installed in their bedrooms. In today’s date, more than 20% of Indian homes are fitted with an AC, contributing hugely to global warming and rise in temperature. But, probably there is no way out! AC has become a necessity rather than a luxury. It has become an inevitable part of the houses of the middle class and upper-class people. By the next five years, every house would be having an AC or two in their houses! With the rise in the necessity of AC in India, it is crucial for the new buyers to know a few things before their unwanted contribution to global warming. Here’s everything you need to know before buying an AC in India.

1 What’s an AC and how it works?

AC stands for Air Conditioner, which is an electric-driven machine with which you can remote control the temperature of your room concerning the outside temperature and get that degree of coolness you want. It works by reducing the temperature with the help of a ‘refrigerant.’ It absorbs the heat from the room and expels it away. In this process, it also produces wastewater which is drained by the AC duct. The drainage of wastewater is proof that the AC is working.

2 What are the types of ACs?

Depending upon the placement if compressor and blower, ACs are of three significant types:

  • WINDOW AC: As the name suggests, these ACs are more substantial and thus need a bigger hole like a window to get fitted. They are the most common and widely used ACs till the past few years, after which split ACs took over. It offers more planning and less flexibility in their installment. They come in various sizes, which is measured in tons. Usually, window ACs come in ranges starting from 0.75 tons up to 2 tons.

  • SPLIT AC: As the name suggests, there are two units of this AC, indoor blower unit and outdoor compressor unit. They come in various sizes as well as tons, ranging from 0.75 to 3.0 tons.

  • PORTABLE AC: This type of AC has made its way just recently. They are portable and thus can be carried from one place to another, just like coolers. They are lighter, than other types of ACs but make more noise than window ACs since their compressor is located indoors.

3 How to calculate the right size of AC for your room?

This question is likely to be the most disturbing one among all other while buying an AC in India. While the right choice can give you a good night’s sleep, the wrong one is sure to make your sleep cycle disturbed. A 1 Ton AC will cool an area of 80-120 sq. Ft,1.5 Ton will cool 120-150 sq. Ft.  and a 2 Ton AC will cool an area of 250 sq.Ft. It also depends on the volume of the room, the orientation of the room and number of people occupying the room.

4 Where to install?

The location of the installation, to a large extent, the type of AC you will have to buy. If you want a less noisy compact, AC with better aesthetics split AC is the best. You also have to consider the space you have outside of your room to place the compressor and drain the duct tube.

5 What design to choose?

ACs come in a variety of designs, but white colored ones are more largely manufactured than colored ones. You need to consider the color of your house and then buy the AC with a complimenting color. Usually, white ones look pretty well in every house. Some ACs have several other features such as remote controlling system, Wi-Fi connectivity, anti-bacterial filter, dust filter, room heater, dehumidifier, and auto clean function as well. There are also inverter ACs available. Carefully choose from a wide range of variety found in the market.

6 What is the noise tolerance level of the room?

If you are going to place your AC in the bedroom or study room, noise is something you need to consider. A window AC makes more noise than a split AC and split ACs are more preferred since they make comparatively much less noise. However, their outdoor units, which consists of the compressor and fan, need to be kept slightly away from near the bedroom or study room, which then requires the cost of wiring and ducting.

7 Which brand of AC should you buy?

Well, this is a very personal aspect of the process of buying an AC. There are many old but renowned companies, and there are also new companies. It’s your choice to select a brand of your choice, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

  • The initial cost of installment.
  • Cost of spare parts.
  • The availability of service centers near your house.
  • Cost of maintenance.

Here is a list of the top room AC brands in India:

  1. Samsung
  2. Voltas
  3. LG
  4. Hitachi
  5. Carrier
  6. Whirlpool
  7. Blue Star

Picking up the home AC is not any Herculean task. But, being careful and open to all the choices available and knowing what you need is essential for such a significant investment. Also, don’t forget to consider the electricity consumption of the AC you are going to buy and switch it off when not in use. Always check your machine correctly before purchasing. Protect your AC from excessive dust and do regular maintenance for enjoying your fully functional air conditioner.
